My Travel Story

Hello all,

Thank you for considering supporting my study abroad journey to South Africa and Eswatini this May, 2025. My name is Bella Brown, a junior at Nazareth University in Rochester, NY, majoring in Communications and Media with minors in Community Youth Development and Digital Marketing.

My previous study abroad experience in Cuba this past January 2024 was transformative. It broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for diverse cultures and ways of life. This experience ignited a desire within me to continue exploring the world and engaging with different communities.

This upcoming program in South Africa and Eswatini offers an incredible opportunity to do just that. Over three and a half weeks, we will participate in collaborative service-learning projects focused on:

South Africa and Swazi history, culture, and politics
Youth development, urban and rural sustainability, and wildlife conservation
Our work will involve visiting schools, teaching high school students about higher education and career paths, supporting preschoolers with book donations and literacy activities, and contributing to nutrition, sports, and education initiatives at local schools.

This program is deeply meaningful to me for several reasons. First, my passion for community building drives me to immerse myself in diverse settings and learn firsthand how communities function and thrive. Second, I've been inspired by the positive experiences shared by friends who have connected with their heritage in Africa, and I long to experience this connection for myself. Finally, I believe this experience will significantly enhance my future career by providing a unique global perspective and practical skills in community engagement and cross-cultural communication. I envision applying these skills to my everyday life!
