My parents named us after places
My Travel Story
It's about my name, my destiny and my struggles and my dreams.
So before I get too carried away there is a black and white movie you must watch. It is called To Have and to Have Not.
Many years ago my father loved this movie... He loved Lauren Bacall, he loved her character in this flick, her intelligence and her strength, her determination, her positivity and her sarcasm. And so I was named Martinique, after the island the movie was set on to remind my parents of the feelings they got when they watched it, and the personality they were sure I would embody.
Fast forward a few years, and you have a coming over age Martinique who has now straightened her hair and goes by Nikki. Rejecting everything I once dreamed up! Life and all of its ups and downs had stripped me of my confidence and paved the way to a path of broken dreams.
And so I enrolled in college, then found a job planning events at a performing arts center. And I hid my desires to write, act, create and play music and even travel.. All my desires to tell the stories of all of those I encounter were put away so I could “be adult” “make money” etc.
That only lasted a little while though…You can’t suffocate who you are long before it comes bursting out.
In the next chapter I quit my career to become a flight attendant, so I could at minimum see the world……….. Then as soon as I could I bought a camera and started to learn to shoot it professionally and also tried to learn to write music any way I could. —- I taught myself piano, then took lessons and learned music theory and then with the help of friends learned to write and produce music. I taught my f stop, ISO and shutter speed and lighting and posing and employed all my Hollywood aspiring talent friends as my models.
I carried my camera, my headphones, laptop and keyboard on every layover and I obsessed for years.
I struggled a long time to find my path again, but today I can say I do have the map in my hand.
So I am now crowd funding to begin a professional tour and build a community of people who love the world and the arts as much as I do.
I dream of traveling the world performing my music at various venues as a techno dj / producer and also shooting photograph to publish and videos to tell the behind the scenes story of these places and the people that make them so special. - basically capturing our world through my eyes and letting those who can’t travel see it first hand.
Maybe even hosting a show one day, think Anthony Bourdain, but female and an artist instead of chef version of that.
Later I want to write a book on becoming. It’s so hard when you are young to just follow your dreams, when you have no idea where your map went. - but if you never give up, and you work hard to create the momentum your path will eventually follow you.
