My Travel Story

by: Megan Ahern Start Date: Feb 16, 2025 - End Date: Jun 15, 2025
Hello!

My name is Megan and I am a graduate student at Salish Kootenai College (SKC) on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. SKC is one of only five tribal colleges in the United States that offers graduate degree programs, and it has been a privilege to work towards a master's degree in my community while designing and completing a research project that benefits Séliš-Ql̓ispé people through the conservation of culturally significant tribal resources and places. This degree will also prepare me to continue my career path as a wildlife biologist. After completing my fieldwork for this project, I accepted a position contributing to the management of Alaska's natural resources, and have since been working on my thesis remotely. Settling into a new place in a vibrant community has been rewarding, but unfortunately I cannot afford to travel back to campus to attend SKC's graduation ceremony in person. I am the only member of my immediate family to pursue an advanced degree, and having the opportunity to walk and celebrate this accomplishment in person with my community would provide a sense of closure for this chapter. My master's research is the first project to ever be approved by both SKC' Institutional Review Board as well as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes' Reservation Review Board, and it represents a momentous achievement for all parties involved. Please consider donating and helping me celebrate this moment in person.
