My Travel Story

by: Alexandra Corey Start Date: Jun 17, 2016 - End Date: Dec 13, 2016
I am going 3 hours south of Bagnkok to rural Thailand to volunteer on a Globalteer Elephant Sanctuary. I could go on for pages about the importance of the cause, and why I'm passionate about it, but I'll try to keep it brief :)

First and foremost, the elephants we'll be working with are known as trekking elephants. They were saved from pourly run tourist grabs, where they were malnourished, overworked, and raised simply to entertain humans. Now, through this wonderful organization (I researched many to find it) humans can give back to the elephants, allowing them to live out their remaining years as an elephant should. Happy, healthy, and wild (as much as they're able to safely be).

Elephants happen to be my favourite animal, for numerous reasons (did you know they purr?). It has also always been a dream of mine to travel South East Asia, and do something deeply meaninful during the trip. The chance to give back and volunteer at this elephant sanctuary is an absolute dream come true!

For the first time in my life, the pieces are falling into place for this this trip to be a possibility, and through Globalteer I've found a cause that I feel extremely passionate about! I have made my down payment to secure the placement, but the biggest obstacle I face is funding...and that's why I'm here. I would also like to travel for a few months after volunteering, and learn more about the cultures in South East Asia. However, any money raised through Fund My Travel I will spend purely on making volunteer work at the elephant sanctuary a reality!

Hoping that your kindness can help me help elephants :) Thank you from the very bottom of my heart.
