A Reunion After 20 Years

As the train rumbled through the countryside, my heart pounded with anticipation. It had been twenty years since I last saw my grandparents. Life had taken me far away—college, work, responsibilities—but not a single day passed without thinking about them. Now, after two decades, I was finally returning to the home where my childhood was filled with laughter, warmth, and the scent of my grandmother’s cooking.

As I stepped off the train, I saw the familiar narrow path leading to their house. My hands trembled as I carried my bags, memories rushing back with every step. The old wooden gate creaked as I pushed it open, and there they were—my grandparents, standing on the porch, just as I had left them in my mind.

My grandfather, now with silver hair and a frail frame, squinted before recognition lit up his face. My grandmother gasped, covering her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. Before I could say a word, they pulled me into the warmest embrace I had felt in years.

“You’ve grown,” my grandfather whispered, his voice shaky but filled with joy.

“You never changed,” I replied, fighting back my own tears.

Inside, everything felt frozen in time. The old wooden clock still ticked in the corner, the same embroidered curtains hung in the kitchen, and the aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air. Sitting at the dinner table, my grandmother held my hands tightly, as if afraid I would disappear again.

That night, we talked for hours, reminiscing about the past, laughing about childhood mischief, and sharing stories of the years we had lost. I realized then that time may have taken me away, but it could never erase the love we shared.

As I lay in my childhood bed, listening to the crickets outside, I promised myself—I would never let another twenty years pass without coming home.
