My Travel Story

Rustic Pathways provides travel and service programs that empower students to positively impact lives and communities around the world. As I have never traveled outside of the United States I would love to spend my last summer in high school volunteering in Fiji. It would be an amazing opportunity to both see other parts of the world and further my understanding of other cultures.

The Fiji Islands trip caught my eye for several reasons. The most important factor was the amount of community service involved. I would like to be helping, learning, and volunteering as much as possible. This trip allows students to work on six different community service projects ranging from tutoring to working on a construction project in a nearby village. Teaching children English will be one of the projects we'd work on in Fiji. I will use these new skills to continue to tutor children in English in my surrounding communities. There are many children in South Florida who struggle in school simply because they don't know English well.

Another important factor is the location itself and all the possible activities. My weekends will be spent enjoying the wonders that Fiji has to offer such as swimming and snorkeling at the beautiful Natadola beach and the Mamanuca Islands. Growing up in South Florida, I love the beach and the ocean, but have only experienced Florida beaches, limited beaches in Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas beaches.

Overall, this trip will truly be the trip of a lifetime, a life-changing educational experience. I'll be able to interact with native Fijians for two weeks while teaching English, helping in construction, and learning about their culture. I will forever cherish the memories from this fantastic adventure.
