My Trip to Freiburg to Expand My Knowledge on Sustainability
My Travel Story
As someone with significant German ancestry, I have always felt a connection to the country and its people. Choosing Freiburg as my study abroad destination was a natural choice as it allows me to immerse myself in the culture and traditions that my ancestors once practiced. Freiburg offers me an opportunity to not only reconnect with my heritage, but also gain a stronger understanding of German society and values firsthand. Moreover, Freiburg has gained a reputation as a pioneer in sustainability. What Freiburg has achieved in terms of their commitment to renewable energy, eco-friendly transportation, and sustainable urban planning sets a high standard for other cities hoping to follow suit. As an individual, Freiburg offers insight on how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. The desire to live more environmentally friendly is central to my study abroad experience. The city's emphasis on sustainability allows me the opportunity to explore alternative eco-conscious lifestyles and habits and see them put into practice by its citizens. From learning about green architecture and the history of environmentalism in Freiburg, I am aiming to immerse myself fully in the city's ethics and incorporate their practices into my daily routine.
Additionally, I want my study abroad journey to be about more than the external landscapes; I want to embark on an inner journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
Freiburg's vibrant cultural scene and diverse academic offerings would enable me to explore my interests thoroughly and gain cultural competency skills. I also hope to find clarity on my future career path through my immersion in the local community and by delving into the academic teachings and advice from Dr. Stele and Dr. Muñoz, my professors. In particular, I am eager to explore potential sustainability and environmental ethics career avenues that could utilize my background in biochemistry and cultural competency skills.
Furthermore, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, it's important for me to feel safe in the places I travel to. As a widely accepting country, I am excited to discover Germany's queer history during my study abroad period. With significant milestones such as the emergence of the gay rights movement in the 19th century and the work of sexologists like Magnus Hirschfield, Germany houses a rich queer history and culture. I look forward to engaging myself in their history and gaining a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences and identities that have shaped German social structure. This knowledge will allow me to become more comfortable with my own queerness and further explore my own sexuality.
Ultimately, my decision to study abroad in Freiburg was driven by my profound curiosity for sustainability, my heritage, and desire to grow as a person. By absorbing the city's rich cultural history, embracing its sustainable processes, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery through my ancestry and queer history, I am aiming to return from this experience a more informed, confident, and environmentally conscious individual. Freiburg will give me the courage needed to tackle the challenges of professional life with renewed confidence.
