My Travel Story

Hello! My name is Madison, I am a Psychology major at Coastal Carolina University with a concentration in Forensic Science as well as a minor in Spanish for Health Professions. I have a 3.8 GPA, run a Research Club on campus as well as being a part of the Psychology Club, and am a competing member of the Annual Professional Undergraduate Research Symposium. My largest career goal is to provide mental healthcare and representation to minorities and under-represented communities in the United States. Mental health can be a very taboo topic for many people and a lack of access and education contributes to the systemic mental health problems many citizens face. In order for me to be a good representative for someone outside of my community, I must develop not only my language skills but my cultural awareness and understanding of the communities I plan to work with. I will be in Valencia for four weeks working under a psychologist in her private practice which will not only immerse me in Spain's culture but allow me to use my Spanish language skills as well as my psychology degree to provide care for patients. This clinical experience will allow me to be better prepared to enter the workforce in the United States and provide a much better quality of care to Latinx communities. I have spent many hours in classrooms studying intercultural studies and now is my chance to apply my skills!
I applied for a total of 14 scholarships and grants through my university with the help of staff and my Spanish professor who is trying her best to get me whatever help she can. However, when the war against Ukraine was declared, funding for abroad programs were dropped as a way to deter students from international travel. Spain remains an approved location for me to travel to but the issue now is scholarships I spent a year applying to are now unavailable and my trip is in June, 2022. I am now left on my own at the last minute to pay for all expenses for a trip that was supposed to be sponsored by my school. Any support helps!
