My Travel Story

by: wesley martin Start Date: Dec 9, 2025 - End Date: Apr 8, 2026
My name is wesley martin and I’m raising funds for my wife, Joana. in october of 2023 my wife of 30 years went to work as uasual. i was at work myself. my wife called me and said she has the worst headache of her life. about 30 minutes later her coworkers were calling me saying she fainted and was unresponsive. i told them call 911 because she has high blood pressure. she was taken by ambulance to guadalupe regional hospital in seguin texas. when i arrived the medical staff said they were not equipped to handle her and she would be transported to a better equipped hospital in san antonio texas. after 12 hours of waiting to hear something on her condition they finally told us she had a stroke, her chance of survival is almost none. swelling and fluid around the brain stem. if they didnt do emergency surgery to relieve pressure on her brain she would die. if they did do emergency surgery it has risks. she could be paralyzed and possibly be blind since it involved her brain stem. after months in the hospital she survived but our lives were forever changed. my wife was told she would never walk again. she spent months in a wheelchair and being fed with a feeding tube at home. after a few months i worked hard on my wifes recovery and had her eating on her own so we had her feeding tube reomoved. she was able to eat on her own. she struggled hard to get out of her wheelchair and re-learn to walk again. her speech started improving. a few months later she was up moving around on her own but paralyzed on her right side and using a cane, a few months later she told me her stomache hurt real bad and we were back in the emergency room and after numerous xrays and mr's they determined she had uterus fibroids and they were 10 centimeters in diameter....another surgery to remove her uterus. today she is home and able, to walk with a cane,re-learn to feed herself with only her left arm because the right arm is paralyzed. shes gonna be on blood pressure medication for the rest of her life. we have been through every hell you can imagine from almost being evicted because i wasn't able to work because i was focused on my wifes recovery. our only truck got reposessed once because i wasnt able to make the payment. we are a family of 4. now that my wife is at home we dont have the 2 incomes from us both working. we rely on only me working to support us,pay rent, pay utilities and our truck payment and auto insurance, and buy food. to make things worse we live outside the city of san antonio tx in the city of devine texas. the nearest emergency room is in peersal tx 30 miles from where we currently live. were hoping to pay off what we owe our current landlord and move closer to san antonio were my wife has easire access to helath care and a closer emergency room if god forbid something happens. any amount helps $20 may not seem like much but it is. thats half a tank of gas to get my wife to her doctor appointments, it helps with her blood pressure medicines and she takes 4 different ones, its gas to get me to work and sometimes buy food. we don't get any government assistance. no medicaid,no foodstamps or rent asisstance....we rely only on what i earn from working and struggle to pay our bills. were just trying to pay off our current landlord and move closer to the city where my wife can get better health care and a better qualty of life.
