My Travel Story

by: Emma Klein Start Date: Mar 28, 2014 - End Date: Apr 26, 2014
Hi all! Thanks for visiting my page. I am trying to fundraise money to travel to Tanzania this summer and work as an HIV/AIDS educator for the organization Support for International Change. I am passionate about this program because I'm very interested in infectious diseases, both in a laboratory setting and in a real-world setting. Working on this humanitarian program while seeing something I'm interested in on the ground would be a dream come true.

Here are some more details about the program:
Before departing, I will participate in pre-field sessions here in Claremont to learn more about Tanzanian culture, Swahili, and the biological and cultural impacts of AIDS. Upon arrival in Tanzania, I will spend about 10 days in the city of Arusha doing an orientation, where a curriculum will be outlined along with receiving safety information and getting oriented to the country. At the end of this period I will be placed in a village with 2-3 other volunteers and 2 Tanzanian students who will work as our teaching partners. In the village I will live in a homestay and teach classes to children and adults, as well as organizing community awareness and testing days. Additionally, we will have about a week off to travel, during which I would like to try and climb Kilimanjaro.

The program dates are May 31 - July 24.

My school has generously offered me funding to cover the program fee and some of the other travel expenses but I still need to cover the cost of the flight and a few in-country expenses, mainly the Kilimanjaro trip I mentioned above. Thank you for reading this and hopefully contributing!
