Abi's Sri Lanka Adventure 2017
A year ago, a friend of mine told me about the SLV team and the work they do in Sri Lanka and Bali. I read up online about it and thought it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and now I’m embarking on the trip of a lifetime...
On January 16th 2017 (well... the 15th but it is a 20 hour trip!) I will be travelling to Sri Lanka for 3 months on a volunteering/placement opportunity. I will be volunteering with adults and children on a number of projects for example, planning lessons for teaching English to adults up to the age of 40. As well as working within a psychiatric facility helping patience with rehabilitation, to name a few, while also finding time to visit the beautiful island.
This trip is going to be a great opportunity to help some people suffering from mental illnesses with rehabilitation and developing their skills. My dissertation was about the stigma surrounding people with depression focusing on various social demographics for example, gender, social class and looking at how the media influences stigma of depression. Researching these areas is what encouraged me to want to help people with mental illnesses and I think it is going to be extremely interesting to see how a different culture goes about this.
I look forward to applying the knowledge I learnt at university to a real life setting in order to help somebody and change someone’s life, not only that but in a different culture as well, this trip is going to be truly rewarding.
Therefore, it would mean so much to me if you could help me raise enough money to go and help people in need, anything you can give would be amazing!
Thank you so much for your generosity and support! And I promise to keep everyone informed of what's going on while I am in Sri Lanka.
