My Travel Story

by: Olivia Read Start Date: Feb 25, 2018 - End Date: Jun 24, 2018
In June 2018 I will be leaving to take part in a month-long volunteer placement in Bali with SLV.Global, where I will be working alongside other volunteers in a variety of different settings.

There is a very distinct lack of understanding about mental health issues in Bali and therefore few facilities where people can seek treatment if they require it. This is why SLV.Global's work is so valuable to it's service users.

My initial week will be spent being trained to work with people with special needs and mental health issues as well as learning to effectively teach children and adults English. The following three weeks, I will then put all my training into practice, splitting my time between running activity sessions for children with specific needs, working in one of Indonesia's only psychiatric facilities, teaching English for development and running community outreach programs designed to keep elderly residents healthy.

This volunteering is part of my work placement year for my psychology degree at Bournemouth University. This experience will enhance my knowledge and experience of mental health which will help me during my career after I graduate.

Any money I raise will cover my placement fees for the organisation which includes all workshops, training, transport from the airport, homestay accommodation with meals and more.

Every penny helps and I am very grateful for any donation!

Thank you for your support!
