Haley's Healthcare in Peru Trip
My Travel Story
Trip details: Though this program is a study abroad, I really believe it is more of a servant leadership opportunity. Students from a variety of fields will collaborate to assess communities in impoverished areas of Peru, and coordinate medical clinics and outreach teaching programs. During the three week trip, we will hold the majority of our clinics in Iquitos, Peru, also traveling into the Amazon Jungle and down through Cusco. The interdisciplinary care that our group provides includes nursing, pharmacy and occupational therapy. Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to experience a new culture, but we are able to positively influence the communities and people we leave behind.
About myself: In December 2014 I will graduate from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a nurse I aspire to work with impoverished communities in the States and abroad, promoting sustainable healthy behaviors and resiliency. This is a goal that I have acquired after several service trips abroad, and through my education here at WSU. I will likely begin my career in the United States to gain experience, before moving on to travel nursing.
Funding: I have worked really hard to pay for this trip myself, I work about 20-25 hours/week and go to school full time! I have the basics covered (flights, participation expenses and tuition), but I need help paying for the extra expenses:
-Immunizations (typhoid, yellow fever)
-antibiotics for malaria and traveler's diarrhea
-OTC meds (immodium, pepto, ibuprofen, antihistamines, dulcolax, neosporin etc.)
-mosquito netting, DEET, sunscreen, permethrin, hand-sanitizer
-exam gloves (2-3 boxes)
-jungle-proof clothing (lightweight scrubs, moisture-wicking shirts)
-multi-sport sandals (Tevas/Chacos)
-snacks (we are provided breakfast/lunch/dinner, but might need an extra boost for a 12-hour clinical day!)
-money to participate in excursion trip to Machu Picchu and Amazon boat ride
I cannot wait to combine my passion of travel with service learning to grow as a healthcare provider and leader, thank you so much for taking the time to read my story!
