Abby’s Journey: Ecuador and the Amazon Rainforest
My Travel Story
Hi friends! If you know me, you probably know I’ve always had a heart for kids, culture, and growth. What you may not know is that I was actually supposed to study abroad in Quito, Ecuador, back in 2020. I had earned a scholarship, everything was set, and I was ready to experience something totally new — but like so many plans during that time, the trip was cancelled due to COVID. Since then, going to Ecuador has stayed on my heart, and now I finally have the chance to go — not as a student this time, but as a teacher.
In July 2026, I’ll be traveling to Quito to assist in local schools, helping children in low-income areas build their English skills. I’ll be working alongside other English teachers, offering one-on-one help and support wherever it’s needed most — whether that’s practicing conversation, encouraging confidence, or simply showing up for these kids with love and patience.
As part of this trip, I’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Amazon Rainforest, where I’ll be volunteering in the reforestation process by planting trees, and native plants to help restore this vital ecosystem. I’m really looking forward to learning more about the environment, conservation efforts, and the natural beauty of the region while giving back in a meaningful way.
This experience means even more to me because I’ve always dealt with social anxiety and have often been the shy one in the room. But something in me knows that immersing myself in a brand-new place, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and unfamiliar rhythms, is going to help me grow in the best way. It’s something I’ve been quietly working toward for a long time — learning how to stretch myself without losing myself.
Right now, I’m in the middle of my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course, and I’ll be fully certified by next June, just in time for the trip. I’m so excited to apply what I’m learning in real classrooms — and just as excited for what the experience will teach me in return.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read and understand why this trip means so much to me. Whether you’re able to donate, share, or simply send encouragement, I appreciate it more than words can say. I’m excited (and a little nervous) to take this step, but I know it’s one I’m meant to take.
Love,
Abby
