My Travel Story

Hello and thank you for taking out time to read this,

My name is Devin Booker, I am currently a full time college student at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I also work three jobs to pay for school costs. I am a young man with a dream and passion that drives my hopes and desire of teaching English in Yantai China. Like an insect to light, I am drawn to serving others in areas that are sometimes neglected.

Since I was young I have always had a love for China and the Chinese culture. My mother sometimes tells a story of me requesting to be sent to China to become a monk. To my dismay, she would not send me; she said that they would not accept me. My friends jokingly say that if I go I would never want to come back; to which they may have a point. The mystery and power of the Chinese history and culture is such a huge part of me. It is more than an interest or a hobby, it is part of me. I know that experiencing this will help me to grow socially, intellectually, and in other ways that i have not even fathomed.

A major part of why I want to go is the passion I feel in my heart but also I want to help teach and do my mark to better the world. I feel like this will be both a physical and spiritual journey where I hope to learn a lot about the Chinese and myself. I truly believe that the only way to grow as a person is to test yourself and overcome obstacles.

The program I wish to go on is in Yantai China. With this program I would teach at two different schools with around 6,000 to 8,000 students. I know this will be a huge change and a cultural shock but I feel like this is the path that I must take. The cost of the program includes a flat with accommodations, food, as well as program assistance, pickup and drop off from the local airport. On the weekends I could travel to local monasteries as well as tourist attractions. They even have local panda reservations and zoos to which I could volunteer! This truly would be a dream come true and to be completely honest I don’t have funds so I am praying, hoping, and wishing that with the help and donations of others I can take this unforgettable journey.
