My Travel Story

by: Jessica Lelah Start Date: Feb 5, 2015 - End Date: May 5, 2015
Hi there, I'm Jessica Lelah. Since I was young I've had a sense of responsibilty for the world. I grew up in a Jewish enviornment where I was taught about Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), Tzadakah (charity) and building Yerushalayim (utopia). Every weekend I volunteer at Shade Tree, Three Square, LV Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities, or Operation School Bell, just to name a few. I also volunteer teaching the younger kids ("Futures") how to play tennis twice a week at my school. I'm very community service focused and when I heard about this program I felt like the pieces just fit. A couple summers ago I went to Camp Ramah. This experience has changed my life and my outlook on the world. And Ramah Seminar: Yedidim is the final step in my Ramah Journey as a camper.
This program is my perfect fit: I will do what I love (tikkun olam [repairing the world]), where I love (Israel)!  It's important for me to do whatever I can to build Yerushalayim. I want to get involved and I want to make a difference in a place that is so dear to me. All through Hebrew School I was told that Israel was my second home. I already do so much for my American Community, it's time for me to help repair my Jewish Community.  Please help me get there! http://seminar.ramah.org.il/yedidim/

The program that I want to go on is through Ramah Seminar, "Yedidim Tikkun Olam" The highlights of this program include:

-Over 70 hours of recognized community service
-Special encounters with leading and cutting edge Israeli social activists
-Volunteering with varied populations including kids, elderly, special needs, refugees, and immigrants
-Work side by side with young Israeli volunteers
-Speakers, tours, and encounters, exploring different facets of social justice, activism, and leadership
-Special leadership opportunities organizing and running projects

I've never been to Israel and for quite sometime Jews didn't have a place of their own-- but now we do. We have Israel. I want to go home and I want to improve that home. There's such a profound and deep rooting connection to Israel. Not everyone can say that and it's a connection that should be explored, encouraged, and embraced. Unfortunatly, there's a heafty bill but anything helps to get me there and make a global impact at the same time! Thank you!
