My Travel Story

by: Morgan Beasley Start Date: Apr 3, 2015 - End Date: Jul 11, 2015
Although studying abroad has been a lifelong dream, it will not be until the fall of 2015 that I will have the opportunity to fulfill it by studying in Aarhus, Denmark. As a psychology student working on minors in forensic psychology and women's studies at New Mexico State University, studying at Aarhus University for a semester would allow me the opportunity to examine psychology in a different culture. Seeing the contrasts between American and Danish society will give me a stronger foundation to build my future career on, especially in terms of my specific interests in the field.

One topic that I have a growing interest in is the pervasive, international problem of human trafficking. While it is a major issue in the United States, it is primarily seen in Europe; living in Denmark would give me more direct access, and therefor, knowledge on the subject that I would be able to apply to my career.

In terms of personal goals while abroad, living in a foreign country will push me outside of my comfort zone in ways I have never experienced. In essence, I will be starting from scratch. I will not know the city I live in, the professors whose classes I attend, nor will I initially have any friends or knowledge of the primary language used in Denmark. By making the decision to embark on this journey alone, I know I will exhibit tremendous growth as a person and student.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make this trip without the financial assistance of others. The majority of my income comes from scholarships, and due to coming from a low income household and being responsible for my costs of living, I have not been able to save much towards this trip. In attempting to collect the total $11,000 needed for the semester, I have applied to over 15 scholarships for study abroad, as well as scholarships available through NMSU. Additionally, I work at several jobs during my weekends and breaks, but due to being a full time student taking 18 credit hours, these weekends are not common. In preparation for the summer, I have secured 2-3 jobs, plus offering my services as a pet/house-sitter, baker, house painter, or any other odd job that may need to be done. Lastly, I opened an Etsy shop at the beginning of the year, where I sell comic book decoupage and crochet pieces, the link to which I will attach below.

I do not feel right asking for the help of others without proving I am doing my best to help myself, and I hope I have done that. This experience would be the culmination of years of hard work, and would provide me with an amazing growth opportunity. Studying abroad has been my dream for many years now, and I am so close. Any amount would help me, and I appreciate all contributions. If you live locally, I am also willing to work for the money if you are not comfortable with donating, as detailed above. For anyone that helps send me to Aarhus, I will send at least one postcard from Denmark to show my gratitute, though it will be a small measure in comparison to helping me achieve my dream. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
