My Travel Story

by: Alexandra Lind Start Date: Apr 18, 2015 - End Date: May 17, 2015
Hello,

My name is Alexandra Lind. I am a student at Ohio State University, and am a Globalization Studies major with a minor in Spanish.

Although, this campaign is not about raising money for a trip for myself. I have a friend, Mamadou, who is originally from Dakar, Senegal located on the Northwest coast of Africa. He moved to the States five years ago for a chance to play basketball at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. After two seasons, he was injured and could no longer continue his career. Because of this, his scholarship to attend was also taken away.

He recently moved to Columbus, OH, and is a roommate of mine. He moved here to look for work, and start saving money to return to Dakar. Although he has obtained a job, it is a minimum wage job, and saving money will be nearly impossible. In Columbus, he is in limbo, and not where he truly should be. He has not seen his family or friends in 5 years, and all he talks about is how much he wants to return home. I truly wish I had the money to pay for a one-way flight ticket myself, but I do not currently.

So I want to ask you all for help, please. I have researched one-way flights from Columbus, OH to Dakar, Senegal. Using skyscanner, I have found tickets in May (Specifically, May 26th) that are around 1300-1400 dollars. I will be fundraising for 1400 dollars.

I have not told him of this campaign because I would like to surprise him. Or, if I can not raise the funds, I do not want him to be disappointed.

He is an extremely kind soul, who treats every single person with respect. From his time here, he has learned to be independent and fight to have a life here.

But if you have ever traveled, or just felt that feeling of being in the wrong place, being trapped, whether it be in your hometown, or somewhere else, you know it is, by far, an unbearable feeling.

So from one traveler to another, I hope you will give to this campaign.

If you have any questions, concerns, comments. Please feel free to contact me via email: amlind20@gmail.com or facebook.

Thank you so much!
