My Travel Story

My name is Simran Sahib Bisnath and I am 18 years old from South Africa. I am the founder of the Legacy Gala Organisation (which provides skills development and empowerment workshops to young girls across South Africa who are impacted by period poverty). I launched my project at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in April 2022 when I was 15 years old. Through this journey, I have been exposed to various platforms in media to spread awareness on period poverty. I am an official TedX speaker and have been acknowledged as one of the Top 7 female youth activists in South Africa. I represented South Africa at a Model United Nations Conference in Thailand where I was placed the World Health Organisation. After experiencing the importance of youth supporting youth internationally, I have partnered up with schools in Belgium, Netherlands and France and bring a United Nations conference into South Africa to further aid developments for the Legacy Gala and send some of our girls to represent the country internationally as well as integrate menstrual equity into our education systems, both locally and abroad. I am extremely passionate about the modelling and pageantry industry having done numerous photoshoots in various countries and many local fashion shows. I have participated in Miss Teen World South Africa, was placed in the Top 6 for Teen Universe, crowned as 2nd Princess for Miss Teen International Princess and was selected as Miss Teen Galaxy South Africa 2023 after being scouted for the position. I am the founder of my school’s debating club, an international advocate for menstrual equity and public speaker. My project has also been endorsed by many global celebrities including Huda Beauty and Podcast and Chill, the largest podcast in Africa. Furthermore, I have also completed my first Harvardx course at age 13 in contract law and am eager to educate myself further at such a profound institute like Harvard and NYU.  Visiting these prestigious institutions would provide me with invaluable insights into the academic programs, campus life, and resources available to students. This firsthand experience would help me make an informed decision about my future educational path and better align my goals with the right university. Furthermore, connecting with current students and faculty would open doors to potential internships, research opportunities, and mentorship that could significantly shape my career trajectory.

Attending a top-tier university like NYU or Harvard would equip me with the knowledge, skills, and network to become a change-maker in my community. I aspire to use my education to address pressing social and environmental issues,  through policy, entrepreneurship and community-based initiatives like the Legacy Gala. By investing in my educational journey, you would be empowering me to create positive, lasting change.

I have chosen to visit NYU and Harvard because they are renowned for their academic excellence, innovative research, and commitment to developing well-rounded, socially conscious leaders. These universities align with my academic interests and career aspirations, and I am eager to immerse myself in their vibrant intellectual communities.

My passion for this project stems from a deep-rooted desire to challenge myself academically and unlock new opportunities for personal and professional growth. I am driven by a relentless curiosity to explore the world, learn from diverse perspectives, and develop the expertise needed to tackle complex global challenges. Visiting these institutions would ignite my intellectual curiosity and inspire me to push the boundaries of what I believe is possible.
