Kaatje's Academic Summer Programs
My Travel Story
This challenge started me down a path of discovery and a new calling. In August of 2023 I had my first brain surgery to install a Cochlear Implant on the left side. The amount of strength and tenacity it takes to undergo this surgery is something many people will never understand. After the surgery, I lost taste on the left side of my tongue due to the petite size of my anatomy. I waited a while after that to have the second brain surgery. In January 2024 I had brain surgery for the second time for the installation of my second Cochlear Implant. If you have never had a pressure bandage on your head for 24 hours, I do not recommend it. The pain in unimaginable. I was determined to hear again. However, I became more determined and inspired to be an asset to the deaf community. What has been a challenge has also allowed me to become a part of a small community of people who are severely underrepresented. I want to be the change for my community. I want to help children and adults like myself. I want to be the Dr. Krystal to others that I had. I want to communicate fluently in the beautiful language of American Sign Language and become the Audiologist that helps others.
I am a Junior in High School. I take honors and AP classes as well as being concurrently enrolled at the local Community College. I have a 3.2 GPA at my High School and a 3.0 GPA at theCommunity College. I am also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. I say all of this to say I need your help.
I have been invited to participate in three different summer programs: 1. National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine and Healthcare through Envision, 2. National Student Leadership Conference and 3. Summer Discovery. I am looking for a sponsor for at least one of these amazing experiences. If I attend the NYLF: Medicine and Healthcare program I can visit Rice University in Houston, TX this summer. The cost includes room and board, lectures, simulations, curriculum and materials, college credit costs, and staff.
If I attend the NSLC program I can visit the University of Oxford in England. The cost includes room and board, course materials, academic expenses, trips, tours, activities, and off-campus event transportation. If I attend Summer Discovery at University of Texas at Austin, I would be involved in the Anatomy Academy. The cost covers academic credits, housing, meals, off-campus activities, and transportation to and from activities. Program costs do not cover travel costs (airfare) or off campus spending including off campus meals. If I was to be sponsored to attend University of Oxford, I would have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit The Old Operating Theatre, an Oxford Medical School/Hospital Tour, Simulation labs, Florence Nightingale Museum and Surgery demonstrations. I would feel blessed to receive a sponsorship for any of these experiences.
The Rice University program would give me college credit which would be amazing and not too far from home. The University of Texas at Austin program would give me a pre-college look into higher education in my chosen future field of study. The University of Oxford program also gives college credit and would give me a cross-cultural experience. The University of Texas at Austin program would give me a pre-college look into higher education in my chosen future field of study.
I would be grateful to receive any kind of sponsorship for these opportunities. Without help, I will not be able to attend, those are the facts. However, I believe these opportunities were put in my path by God for a purpose and I want to fulfill that purpose. Therefore, I am humbling myself and asking for your help. Will you sponsor me financially?
