My Travel Story

Hello everyone!

I have been accepted to spend 10 days in the Southeastern Peruvian Amazon. There, I will be working with the Univerity of Washington in their conservation efforts of native Amazonian bird species.

The site is located along the Madre de Dios river,  2km from the town of Puerto Maldonado in the Madre de Dios of southeastern Peru. The city is about 350km from the historic Machu Picchu.

The expedition, led by Dr. Ursula Valdez and Stacey Astacianna Hatcher, will be focused on bird banding and bird surveying. I will be trained in bird capture techniques using ground and canopy mist nets and possibly bal-chatri traps, data collection and discussion of field methods.

The program also includes an overnight field trip to Lago Sandoval (more birds species and giant river otters!), a morning visit to a gorgeous canopy bridge system and a visit to a parrot clay lick.

This expedition is a huge step forward for my career. I am a current undergraduate seeking a degree in wildlife biology and conservation. I wish to help with bat conservation. The skills that I learn in Peru can be utilized for bat conservation efforts.

I appreciate any financial assistance for this conservation trip. I am a full-time student with a part-time job.

Thank you so much! The birds will thank you, too!
