Proposal for Funding Support: Educational Field Study on Military Governments and Coups in Africa:

Executive Summary

I am seeking funding support to conduct a self-directed, in-depth research trip to Africa focused on understanding the historical roots, political conditions, and recurring nature of military governments and coups on the continent. The trip will involve travel to key countries where coups have significantly influenced political development, with the goal of producing scholarly research, educational content, and policy insights. This initiative will help deepen global understanding of postcolonial governance, democratic resilience, and civil-military relations in Africa.

Purpose and Objectives
The primary purpose of this trip is to gain first-hand insights into the socio-political dynamics surrounding military coups and their recurrence in Africa. My objectives include:
Conduct interviews with local historians, political analysts, and civil society members.
Visit key historical sites and government institutions related to coup events.
Gather case study data from countries with repeated military interventions (e.g., Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Guinea, Sudan).
Develop a comprehensive report and multimedia presentation for academic and public education purposes.
Contribute to ongoing research on political instability and governance in transitional democracies.

Significance
Military coups have disrupted democratic processes in several African nations, often resulting in human rights violations, weakened institutions, and foreign policy shifts. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for scholars, policymakers, and activists working to support sustainable governance. This project offers a unique opportunity to collect primary data and offer fresh perspectives from the ground.
