My Travel Story

Purpose: Study Aboard {I am going to Paris for language study for French, Thailand for Service learning course, and my main internship in Seville, I will also be participating in an European and Austrian immersion tour}

Hi my name is is Scott Dewees, 20yrs and I am reaching out to help myself support my study-abroad dreams. This once in a lifetime opportunity in my education will be the starter for everything. Here’s my story:

I want to start by acknowledging my presence in high school and realizing it starts back then. I attended high school but I wasn’t really there. I didn’t have as much self-awareness, confidence and applied effort as much as I do now. After high school I attended the College of Staten Island for two semesters, as a new freshman in college.

Being on campus with so many different people while still trying to figure out my career path wasn’t overwhelming to me and because I had an idea of why I was attending college and what my career goal was going to be. However, covid completely changed the trajectory of me at school. I started virtual classes and I felt unaccomplished and as if I wasn't being challenged. I didn’t see myself doing anything but I always knew I was going somewhere. Having to login every day to class was dreadful but I was always grateful to still be attending college under the social climate of 2020.

The thing was, it just wasn’t for me. I needed to be around supportive people, a great senior me, and always improving my independence. It wasn’t until the summer of 2021 where I went on my first summer vacation with a close friend. I wasn’t in a bad place before the summer of 2021. However, I definitely didn’t know myself well enough. I didn’t need to be rescued or saved, I needed to acknowledge my own power and how to access it.

My summer traveling experience took me to Hawaii for the seventh time, Cancun, London, Nice, Milan and Ibiza. I was 19 on that trip! I learned how to travel as a young black woman and connected and expressed my womanhood. London especially gave me a time of reflection and allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people in my life now. I have always been traveling around the world to areas with hot climates since I was three years old on family vacations. But traveling solo has cultivated me in terms of being aware, being aware of other people, getting a better understanding of myself and having once in a lifetime experiences at every destination.

I’ve never been the type of person to know my future plans or goals but I definitely take things step-by-step with my life and enrolling into EF gap year is the next step that will influence my life greatly. Due to me traveling so much, I have a newfound empathy for other people when it comes to religion, race, sexual orientation and other peoples beliefs. At the same time I have a Christian based life coach who molds me into a better person instead of changing me. If it wasn’t for traveling while having a life coach, I don’t believe I would be in this blessed and positive headspace.

Time in global citizenship teaches you about other cultures and gives you other experiences that you will always remember. I think on when I’m in my 40s and remembering my traveling experiences and how they helped me to this point. You also get the opportunity to have variance life experiences, whether it be good or bad. I understand that traveling will always be something that I’m fond of and it will always be something I can do as my sense of therapy. It brings me happiness to get on a plane and I know that I’m meeting new people and seeing different things and having the utmost fun. I want to continue to see around the globe to help me get a better understanding of the many opportunities that I have. I want to use all of those lessons and my iridescent personality to pursue my business idea of one day becoming a prodigious spa owner
