Help Me Study Filmmaking in Vancouver Canada!
My Travel Story
My name is Kailany Cruz, and I’m a passionate film student at Miami Dade College (North Campus). Ever since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by movies and the way they can make you laugh, cry, or see the world differently. I come from a close-knit family in Miami, and while I love my home, I’ve always dreamed of experiencing life in new places that challenge me and inspire my creativity. In addition to being a full-time student, I work part-time as a photographer for Foxmar. Balancing school and work has taught me discipline, creativity, and time management skills I know will help me make the most of this Vancouver program. This opportunity is special to me because it would be my first time traveling on my own for my education. It’s a big step out of my comfort zone, but it will help me grow not just as a filmmaker, but as a person.
Why I Chose Film
A lot of people think a film degree is risky or “unrealistic,” but I see it differently. Life itself is unpredictable and I know that firsthand. Since I was little, I’ve been hearing impaired in my left ear. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s shaped me into the person I am today: determined, empathetic, and unafraid to advocate for myself. That’s why storytelling means so much to me. Everyone has a story to tell, and I definitely have one and I want to give a voice to others through film. My dream is to work in film production, write and direct my own projects, and create stories that inspire and connect people.
Why This Matters
For 22 days, I’ll be in Vancouver — known as “Hollywood North” — where I’ll work alongside fellow students and learn from industry professionals at the Vancouver Film School. Together, we’ll write, shoot, and edit original film projects, and at the end, our work will premiere on the big screen. This program will give me hands-on experience in all areas of filmmaking from production to post-production while helping me build professional connections that will guide my career. It’s also a chance to share diverse perspectives through storytelling, including my own experiences growing up hearing impaired. By creating films that inspire empathy and understanding, I hope to make a difference in my community and encourage other aspiring filmmakers.

Why This Means So Much to Me
This program represents one of my first steps toward independence and pursuing my dreams. Growing up hearing impaired taught me the importance of advocating for myself and taking chances. Attending this program is more than a trip — it’s a chance to grow as a filmmaker, challenge myself, and turn a lifelong dream into reality.
