My Travel Story

My name is Derrick, and I recently got accepted into a Mandarin study program in Tainan, Taiwan, hosted by the American Council Study Abroad program. It will be eight weeks of intensive study, while also providing immersion into the culture of Taiwan.
I'm hoping to get accepted into the University of Washington in the Fall, to continue pursuing a major in basic linguistics, with a minor in Chinese. I hope to eventually do translations, or interpretations for the Seattle community, or even teach English as a second language for students abroad, or immigrants and students coming to the United States.
This experience will help me understand the Mandarin language in a cultural context, and not just in a class room setting. I have always been interested in the Chinese language, and Taiwan has always interested me culturally, politically, and linguistically. I also love Taiwanese food, though I've only ever eaten at resturaunts here in the United States.
I would greatly appreciate your donations, and hope that one day I can repay the kindness by helping others realize their travel abroad dreams.
Any extra donations, after paying the intial expenses will be donated to the Seattle Children's Hospital.
