My Travel Story

by: KEYNA BATTLE Start Date: Nov 25, 2024 - End Date: Nov 24, 2025

The opportunity to engage in carpentry greatly enhances my education and career prospects by developing practical skills that are highly valued in the construction industry. As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, I can help break stereotypes and pave the way for future generations of women. This experience will not only equip me with hands-on knowledge but also bolster my confidence, networking opportunities, and understanding of the business aspects of carpentry. Ultimately, it will enable me to pursue higher positions in my career, advocate for diversity, and ensure women have a voice in the industry.

By participating in carpentry, I aim to inspire young women and girls in my community to explore trades that have historically been overlooked by women. I plan to organize workshops aimed at teaching basic carpentry skills, showcasing the possibilities within the field, and demonstrating that women can excel in any profession. Additionally, I hope to collaborate with local organizations dedicated to supporting women in trades, creating a supportive network and mentorship opportunities that empower others to follow their passion in carpentry and related fields.

I am passionate about this project because it combines my love for craftsmanship with my commitment to gender equality. Carpentry allows me to create tangible results while expressing my creativity. More importantly, I'm driven by the goal of increasing representation and inclusion of women in the trades. Through this project, I can contribute to altering perceptions about women in carpentry and helping dismantle the barriers that exist in this field.

I chose this destination because it has a rich history of craftsmanship and a community that values hands-on skills. Moreover, this location has specific programs that support women in trades, which aligns perfectly with my goal of connecting with like-minded individuals and seeking mentorship. Being in an environment dedicated to promoting diversity in carpentry will allow me to gain invaluable insights and support my aspirations to become a successful carpenter, while also sharing my experiences with others.

This experience is meaningful to me because it represents more than just acquiring skills; it's an opportunity to challenge societal norms and perceptions regarding women's roles in construction. As I learn and grow in this field, I am not just investing in my future, but also contributing to a larger movement advocating for equality in the trades. Being part of this change and enabling other women to find their voice and passion in carpentry adds profound significance to my journey, reinforcing my belief in the importance of representation and opportunity for all.
