My Travel Story

by: Sara Greene Start Date: Dec 12, 2022 - End Date: Jun 11, 2023
This trip will allow me to immerse myself in a hidden corner of South Africa, experience part of the African lifestyle, become scuba certified and make a difference to the health of the surrounding waters. This volunteer trip will be a life-changing experience not only for me but hopefully for the ocean's inhabitants as well. Volunteering along 50km of unspoiled reef in the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park, where approximately 1100 species of fish fill the oceans is a unique and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Initially I would be getting my scuba certification which is something I've been wanting but unable to do for several years. After certification I would be diving twice a day helping count, observe and document the species under the seas. Not only would this volunteer trip be an incredible experience and opportunity to help document and report the marine wildlife along the reef, but also would help prepare me for my future career. I am currently in school for animal health and behavior with the desire of a career in marine wildlife care. Marine animals are something particularly meaningful to me not only because the ocean has always been a peaceful safe place for me but also because animals have always had a special place in my heart.
