My Travel Story

by: Arvin Kenneth Cruz Start Date: Oct 4, 2016 - End Date: Jan 31, 2017
When I was a very young, my father always drives me with his rundown motorcycle beside the fence of the airport runway in Manila, Philippines and we always see airplanes land and take off for about an hour. I dreamed of being a pilot someday. My father always encouraged me that one day, I will be able to ride airplanes and reach different countries as what I've always dreamed. I've memorized countries, flags, and their capitals when I was just 6 years old and started reading encyclopedias about different world cultures. That started my fascinations and dreamed that one day, I'll be able to reach distant places.

As one of the top student way back in my university, I was able to save some money from scholarship discounts and I did some part-time jobs so I can have some money to backpack Southeast Asia. After graduating university, I decided to finish all 10 Southeast Asian countries and I'm happy I achieved it. I am currently based in Thailand and for the past 6 months, unemployed and struggling to find work. So with my savings, I decided to achieve another thing that no other foreigners in Thailand have done - to travel all 77 provinces of Thailand. I consider it as my therapy for my frustrations and desperations of finding a new job, as for all 600 companies I applied online, no one ever replied nor called me back. I felt rejected and no one.

As I was reassessing my life, I remembered a dream that I told myself when I was young and that is to reach the end of the world - Ushuaia. It started when I read a 2003 Issue of my church magazine of my religion where Ushuaia was featured with an article titled "To the Ends of the Earth". I got so excited!! I can still remember borrowing my friend's floppy disk and running to internet shop to Google Ushuaia and struggles to save 1 photo of it on a 1.44MB floppy disk. I am saving it so I can use it as my desktop computer wallpaper (my family do not have internet that time).

Presently, I just created my Facebook Page that will feature people that I meet along my way while traveling. Like people who helped me when I am lost in the jungle of northern Thailand, a family that adopted me for a night when they saw me sleeping on a bus terminal on the middle of the nowhere in Indonesia, etc. I am excited to also experience great people of South America.

Now, with platform such as fundmytravel, I am hoping that I can reach that dream. As I knock on your heart, I am hoping that with your kind generosity and help, you can able to help me with one of my childhood dreams - to reach Ushuaia. Words can't describe how thankful I will be for whatever amount will be contributed and I can assure you that you will be and will always be part of my journey.
