My Travel Story

by: Aurelie Jean Baptiste Start Date: Jan 19, 2021 - End Date: Jul 18, 2021
When I was deciding whether I should actually take a chance and bet on myself to study abroad,    people in my close circle would look at me and frown as if the answer was quite obvious, “ who wouldn’t want to go to France?” However, for a person like me, studying abroad wasn’t a decision I was going to entertain with no real practical means (money) to make my dream come true. Traveling has always been something I knew I needed to do in my lifetime. After all, three months after my mother gave birth to me in Miami, she took me to Haiti where I grew up for the next 9 years of my life with my family. I’ve had a passport since before I could say “mama”, but since coming to live in the states in 2010, I had found little use for my passport. My family had built a new life here, and my days of traveling were far behind me. From then on, my only goal was to get into college as a first gen. student. Now that I am in college, I recently thought about going back to pursuing my childhood dream of seeing the world. Though I don’t have all the money I need to go to Europe, I choose to take a leap of faith like my parents did when they moved my siblings and I to the states. Going to study in France is more than just a tourist trip for me. Rather, it is a chance to excel beyond everything I was thought to be possible for a person like me. Because of certain sacrifices my parents had to make in order to move here, financial circumstances have limited my family from pursuing certain aspirations. However, I’ve broken limitations before and I’m confident with the right help and support, I can get to Europe. As a writer, this experience will broaden my creative horizons and provide myself with a rich and better understanding of people; the very beings I write for :)
