Mental Health Placement in Sri Lanka (SLV Global)
My Travel Story
I will be travelling to Sri Lanka in January of next year to embark on my two biggest passions in life, mental health and travel.
About me and the placement
I have volunteered and worked in the mental health sector for some time now but have never explored what the situation is like in an eastern culture. This has spurred me to take on this challenging placement and work with kids and adults suffering for varying mental health disorders and help them with their recovery using activities and teaching English. I currently work in a mental health crisis centre as a recovery worker also I work as an activity coordinator with adults with learning disabilities and Autism. I feel that I can use my expertise to help those in another culture rather than just my own as mental health is of course a worldwide issue.
Why I am passionate about mental health
What it means to me
This opportunity means so many things to me. It allows me to build on the skills I have already obtained in my current jobs as well as learn how to adapt them to a completely different culture. I also have a passion for travel and this trip will allow me to emerse myself with local people and learn a completely different way of living. My dream career would to eventually be able to combine mental health and travel in which I would like to carry on working with vulnerable people. Thank you for taking the time to read a bit about why this trip is important not just to me but to those I will be helping in Sri Lanka.
