Hi there. My name is Dudley Muchiri from Nairobi, Kenya, currently living in Indonesia while pursuing my MA in International Relations. If you’ll allow me a moment, I’d like to share a love story—the story of Momo and me.
This is a queer love story about hope and joy. I could talk about the challenges of finding love in our community, especially in a country where being gay is still a criminal offense. But this isn’t a story about struggle—it’s about connection, joy, and celebration of love.
Momo and I met in the most unexpected way: a fleeting comment on a Facebook post about music. From that small interaction, we discovered a profound connection that has transformed my life. Over the past year, I’ve come to know a love I never thought possible—a love that has healed old wounds, brought me peace, and made life infinitely more beautiful.
This past June, I received an incredible opportunity to study abroad. Momo, ever selfless, encouraged me to take it, even though it meant putting an ocean between us. Now, thousands of miles apart, our love has only grown stronger. We talk every day, but I long for the moment when I can hold him in my arms again.
Here’s my dream: to bring Momo to Indonesia to celebrate our love in person. I’ve been saving for a custom-made ring, tucked inside a jar of handwritten love notes I’ve been writing since we parted (He's a sucler for handwritten love notes). My hope is to surprise him with a ticket to visit me, take him to Thailand—a safe space for us—and propose.
As much as I wish to make this happen on my own, I can’t do it without help. My scholarship agreement prohibits me from working as I'm in class full-time. So, while I have enough to cover our stay, the airfare is beyond my reach.
