My Travel Story

by: Debra Jones Start Date: Jul 18, 2025 - End Date: Jul 17, 2026

In March 2025, my sister hit a car while driving her Mini Cooper. A 19 year old kid pulled out in front of her while she was traveling on a two lane road doing the speed limit.  She t-boned him because he was turning left off a side road.

She had just spent the previous two years on workman's comp after falling at work and breaking her right knee. She had two surgeries on that knee and was still having a great deal of pain.  In the car accident, she ended up breaking her tib/fib in her left leg, her left wrist, 3 ribs and her L5 vertebrae.

In the ER, the staff set her wrist and sent her to a larger hospital to operate on her leg. After rods were placed in her leg, so was sent to an in house rehab facility because she wasn't allowed to pu weight on her leg. While at this first facility, the rehab team removed the cast from her wrist which displaced the original set causing her to noe require surgery on her wrist. The surgery didn't take place until a month after her accident so she went that entire time with only a flimsy brace on her wrist causing her arm to look like a rubber chicken. All this while being bed ridden because she wasn't allowed to put weight on her leg.

Needless to say, she left that facility and was placed in a facility where the rehab team actually knows what they are doing. She had to stay there for two and a half months. We finally got her home but she still has to do twice weekly physical therapy and occupational therapy to try to walk again without a walker and be able to use her left arm again. And, she still has issues with the leg that was broken at work.

She had been extremely depressed, especially while having to live in the facility and the fact that she's hasn't been able to work for almost three years now. I am able to take her out of the house but only for short periods of time because she tires easily and has a lot of pain if she is gone too long. All she keeps telling me she wants to do when she gets to where she can at least walk with a cane is to visit the quaint town of Helen which looks like a Bavarian village. Please help me bring a little pleasure back to her life which has been miserable for the last three years.
