My Travel Story

by: Julia Boaz Start Date: Aug 26, 2023 - End Date: Dec 25, 2023
My 12 week volunteer trip to Costa Rica will allow me to expand my knowledge on a new culture, create life experience for myself that will push me out of my comfort zone, and be able to make a small difference in a larger movement that will help animals in need, such as dogs, cats, small animals, and turtles. This once in a life time opportunity is going to begin my career path by providing me with a new range of skills and experiences to be working one on one with animals in a new country that I would not have here in the United States. I will be taking asynchronous classes at the SRJC while in Costa Rica so I can advance my education and continue on when I return home. I hope to make an impact in this new community by using a positive and open-mind to learn from people with more experience and do everything in my power to help and work with the animals in my volunteer program. I am very passionate about this next chapter in my life because I believe I have the ability to learn and try new things, meet new people, develop kind and pure relationships, share my experience and bring awareness to the ability that all people share to help others. I feel for the first time in my life that I am conscience of my mind, body, and soul and can use this power to listen and broaden my knowledge on how I can best become a better version of myself and work with other people and animals to make them have the same mindset at the best life everyone can have. I believe that everything happens for a reason and this is about to be the biggest reality check that I have known, further pushing me to gain the skills I will need in the future. I plan to have this trip be the first of many volunteer programs but my first destination is Costa Rica because of the connections that animal shelters share in Costa Rica with local ones in my community. This country also has over a million feral dogs wandering the streets of Costa Rica which drew my attention because I hope to work and train service animals as a future career option. This experience is very meaningful to me because of the impact it has already had on my life and the effects I know are coming. This is an opportunity that I am taking so I truly can do everything in my power to help any living soul who needs it. I love the beauty in life and in people and cannot wait to take in every ounce that I find in Costa Rica; and don't fret I will definitely be sharing my experiences! Hasta luego, safe journeys to all.
