Hi Talia and I are travelling to Sri Lanka in June 2018, to volunteer on a Mental Health Placement for 5 weeks with SLV global.

During our time in Sri Lanka, we will be working is psychiatric wards, special needs facilities and institutions such as Mental Health Care Homes. We will also be running and attending workshops run by Samutthana, the Kings College London resource centre for trauma, displacement and mental health.
Additionally, we will be running activities for these patients using sensory, music and creative therapies.
Samutthana strives to respond to the psychosocial needs of trauma sufferers i.e. tsunami survivors.

Currently, Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of depression, alcoholism, substance abuse and suicide rates in the world. Approximately 5-10% of the population suffers from mental illnesses that require medical attention. However, due to poor funding and lack of trained human resources, these issues cannot be combatted. Statistics of one psychiatrist per 500,000 Sri Lankans demonstrates the importance and essence of our trip.

This Mental Health Placement is unpaid and voluntary, however comes with considerable costs and therefore we are asking for friends, family or anyone who knows or has experienced mental health problems to sponser our trip aswell as covering resources for teaching and planning.

We're really excited to go, and would appreciate any donations (no matter how big or small). During our trip, we'll keep constant updates on social media of the project's progress!

Thank you in advance,
Hollie & Talia
