Midian - a study in human interaction
My Travel Story
What would happen if we became more cognizant of our direction and space, of the magnetisms thereof. If we paid attention to the details of the spaces we design through the lens of human interaction, through the movement of the chaos system that we are, through the sacred geometry in all things, would we not see significant improvement in our lives? Improvement evident in attitude, energy-level, loyalty, committment, initiative, and leadership would be exponentially positive. The evolution we are seeking, the comforts we desire, are in fact not solved by policy, mandate, statute, ordinance, and law. They are entirely situationally derived. To a great degree, we create the situations.
The purpose of this project is to travel to towns of specific population ranges throughout the United States. Cities and towns ranging in population from 25k to 125k will be visited in an order based on total population in regard to area and few other social and cultural factors. I will be staying in each location for a minimum of 5 days, volunteering in community organizations in whatever way possible. I will be seeking involvement in arts organizations, food pantries, shelters, rehabilitation centers, anywhere I have the opportunity to serve. I am a professional carpenter, designer, musician, and a math nerd. In each city, data will be collected and compiled.
I believe there is a correlation between the distribution of space in cities and their overall vibrance (if we can accept this as a measurable quality). The types of spaces, their specific shapes and layouts, their distribution within the city grid, and the human factor, dictate the successful function of a living breathing community. The mistake we make socially is believing we are separate from our neighbors. We believe we are separate from the man that sleeps under the bridge downtown at night. We believe the walls we build enclose us and in this, we are correct, but isn't there a better reason to build walls?
If we begin to see ourselves as a cohesive unit; part of a larger system, we begin to measure our choices differently. If we begin to see that each individual affects the whole, we begin to see the forest and the trees. If we realize the walls we build serve only as dividers subjugating space that is in fact indivisible, we begin to know our boundaries as arbitrary; necessary but flexible. We begin to see ourselves in the light of the incredibly designed chaos system that we are.
Physics shows that there is always space, from the atomic to the infinite; space. Nothing that we exist with or have theorized to be involved with our existence actually touches. Like magnets driven by emotion, propelled by desire, we attract and repel each other, but we never quite touch. As physical beings on this planet, we should seek to make that space between us as small as possible. It will always be there. Mind the gap. Embrace the community. It starts with service. Service is the opportunity.
I'm seeking your support in allowing me to apply my skill-set in service to multiple towns and cities. I endeavor to serve, observe, document, transcribe, calculate, crunch, compile, disseminate, edit, and release information through a multi-media platform of written word, music, photography, and statistical analysis. In the process, I will share as much love and light as humanly possible with everyone and everything I encounter.
I am no longer willing to work for anything except that which produces the greatest positive change. Help me be of service.
Blessings,
Sean Bennight.
