My Travel Story

Hello Friends & Family, community!

As many of you know, service to others is something that brings me joy, fulfillment and purpose. I have long desired to follow my calling to volunteer abroad, but with events happening in life, the timing never really seemed right. This January I will be embarking on a solo journey to pursue this long-time calling, leading me to the Medical needs of the community of Antigua, Guatemala. I'm excited to announce this medical mission trip facilitated by IVHQ, an international volunteer organization. I'll be working alongside local healthcare professionals to gain an understanding of their healthcare system. I'll be helping provide medical care in low-income Antiguan communities where healthcare is neither easily accessible or affordable.

This placement seems necessary for me as I pursue my nursing career, and 3rd world healthcare will be a much needed perspective change. I have always emphasized the importance of helping others, giving love, and doing something larger than ourselves, if we are in the position to do so. This year will be my first time dipping my toe in the pond, as I anticipate to do much more in my following years to come. As we all know, our passions and callings do not always fit our bank accounts.

The healthcare system in Guatemala faces many challenges including being underfunded and understaffed. Especially outside of the major cities, local people struggle to access adequate medical care. Volunteers can help address this critical lack of resources by providing care to disadvantaged communities and helping ensure their health and wellbeing is looked after.

I am very excited for this opportunity to share my time and gain knowledge, but I struggle to do so alone. I'm seeking donations to help cover travel expenses, accomodations, extra community donations, insurance, supplies and fees. This work is unpaid and all patients are treated free of charge. As important as the financial aspect is, I will value your prayers even more, not only for me but for the entire team placement in Guatemala.

Much love,
Sarah Scalzo
