My Travel Story

by: leigh jones Start Date: Mar 26, 2018 - End Date: Mar 25, 2019
In september 2019, I will travelling to Sri Lanka to work with SLV Global on a Mental Health Placement! Here, I will gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of Mental Health and particularly what it's like to work in a clinical setting. During the placement I will be working on numerous projects, including children’s development projects, community initiatives, special needs projects, and teaching English and other skills which aim to help improve locals’ career prospects. I will also be working in psychiatric units and mental health care homes, offering psychological support where staff and resources are scarce and greatly needed.
Sri Lanka is still recovering following the 25 year civil war and devastating tsunami in 2004,  and the psychological damage these events have caused is still hugely prominent. Suicide rates in Sri Lanka are among the highest in the world, and for every 500,000 people, there is reportedly only 1 psychiatrist, meaning the first and often only course of action for the majority of patients is medication as opposed to therapy. In a growing population this demonstrates how Sri Lanka is in dire need of mental health workers and resources to improve well-being.
Whilst in Sri Lanka I will receive specific training from mental health workers and attend workshops in teaching, working with children, and working with those with special needs.
I am asking for any donations to put towards my placement fee of £1700, to enable me to take part in this wonderful opportunity and help as many people as I can. The money goes towards keeping these projects up and running which is essential as the work that SLV does is so important.
