Psychology Internship in the beautiful Seville, Spain!
My Travel Story
My name is Catie Geidl. I added a video explaining practically everything about my intentions to intern abroad in Seville, Spain for 6 months! I felt a video was a bit more meaningful and personal. However, since brevity is not one of my strong suits, I will put a more succinct description here (still going to be lengthy, I apologize). The link to the video is down below along with the link to Adelante Abroad's website. I recently got accepted into an internship position in Seville through a program called Adelante Abroad for the upcoming spring semester. I will include a link to their website on here if anyone is curious. I will be getting credit for this internship through the University of Idaho at which I am an attending “super” senior this year. My internship is going to be psychology/neuroscience based. Although I have been guaranteed a spot in the program, the specific placement has not yet been determined. I am double majoring in both Exercise Science and Health and Psychology but am ultimately pursuing a career in clinical/counseling psychology. This was no arbitrary decision. I am absolutely positive this is the career path that is right for me. I say that because I am simply astounded by people. I think one of life's greatest gifts is being granted the opportunity to meet new special, novel individuals who have something uniquely different to offer the world. Interacting with different characters fills me with an energy that is unlike anything else I've experienced. Humans are extraordinarily complex, and this is why I'm fascinated by the physiological mechanisms that underpin human behavior, but I'd like to use that more as a supplement to counseling. I am very passionate about the human condition, and I think I need to use that passion to help others if I can. I struggled significantly trying to navigate my way through chaos as a teenager, and I'd love to be a resource for others struggling with similar or different mental health ailments. I truly feel like this is the direction I am supposed to be taking in life. This internship will help me develop and build upon the skill set necessary for this profession. I want to gain as much education and experience as I can, so I can perform my job to the highest degree. Mental health can be fragile and is always precious, so being placed in a counseling position where clients will be putting trust and faith in me to help improve upon that is no trivial matter. I chose Spain for this internship because I have a deep rooted desire to be immersed in an entirely different world than what I'm used to. The Spanish culture seems just absolutely wonderful, and I want to integrate myself into their way of living as much as I can manage. This includes learning Spanish, trying all the Spanish cuisine, flamenco dancing (dancing is one of my greatest passions), bullfighting, and everything else involved. Therefore, I studied Spanish over the summer using audio lessons, and I am currently enrolled in a Spanish course at the university! Learning a second language has been a goal of mine for some time, and this is my chance to do it. I decided upon the beautiful city of Seville because after conducting research, it seemed like the best location to experience the traditional Spanish culture. If I'm being honest though, when I saw pictures of the city, my heart skipped a beat. I knew that was where I wanted to intern the moment I laid eyes on the magnificent architecture. Then after reading more about it, it just felt like the perfect fit. I am a huge believer that new experiences that force you out of your comfort zone are often the best experiences because they promote self-growth and allow you to see the world through a completely different lens that otherwise may have remained in shadow. No growth occurs from staying stagnant, and this is something I am slowly but surely learning as I take steps such as this to allow my potential to flourish. Studying abroad has been a dream of mine for so long now. It is difficult for me to express how strongly I feel about doing this. It is all that is on my mind these days. I know it would be a life changing adventure! I realize this all probably sounds cliche, but it is true nonetheless. Anything one might feel like contributing to my quest is sincerely appreciated. I am doing what I can on my own time to receive financial aid and scholarships through my university to help cover the expenses, and it is still a work in progress. The cost of the program is about $7,000, and this includes housing. A round way trip to Seville and back is roughly $2,000 at the moment. I am working two jobs at the moment and am going to try to save up as much as I can, so that I have money to pay for essentials like food and transportation for the duration of the six months. I am in no way expecting to raise the entire amount. Thank you so much in advance!
Sincerely,
Catie Geidl
