My Travel Story

After a trip to bali in 2022 I was lucky enough to swim with turtles in their natural habitate just off the Gili islands. I was so moved by the experince and the peace I felt watching them go about their day that upon returning home I looked into voluterring programs. I will now be returning to Bali this summer to volunteer with the turtles at the conservation centre on the island of Nusa Penida.

There are currently about 7 species of turtles left and at least 6 of the 7 are at risk of extincition. One of the main threats is that developments along coast lines are destroying their habitats, making it harder for females to lay eggs. Climate change is also causing a rise in sea levels and increasing the number of storms that destroy nesting beaches. Not only this, sea turtles can get caught up in fishing lines, causing them to drown and they are regularly poached for their shells, meat and eggs.

We must work to protect these beautiful anicent creatures from extinction. Many cultures have recognised the wisdom of turtles for many years, connecting them to the moon cycles because of the patterns on their shells. They are a true spirit of the sea and I want to do all I can to help keep them on this planet forever.
