My Travel Story

by: Theodora Homela Start Date: Jan 15, 2021 - End Date: Jul 14, 2021
Greetings! My name is Irene, I am 16, and this is my mother, Theodora. We reside in Greece with my brother, an autistic 25 year old, and our little cat. My father passed away on September 9th, 2020, after a long battle with upper intestine sepsis after a brutal heart attack in May 2020. He left us with a broken heart that still hasn't healed.

My mother has always dreamt of going to New York City. Ever since I could remember, I knew that fact about her. But due to unfortunate life circumstances, including medical expenses for my brother when he was young, she was unable to fulfill that life-long desire. Now she is retired, and the mere 350€ pension she gets is barely enough for food and rent, and I feel that her time is running short to see her dream through. I always thought of my parents as immortal, and I've learned that isn't so.

I understand these are unfortunate times, and everyone in the world is struggling. I understand if you can't donate, or if you think this whole thing is stupid. My heart genuinely aches for my mother, and it hurts to see the pain behind her eyes that her whole life, she was unable to realize her dream and I can't even do anything to help her. This is a last resort of sorts, if you'd like. It would mean the entire world to her, in her words, to sit on a curb in NYC and just take it all in. I've had that scene in my head for as long as I can recall memories.

I would be eternally grateful for anything you could give. I just want to see the light in my mom's eyes shine again, after so long. I hope you're having a wonderful day.
