My Travel Story

by: Natalia Klimczak Start Date: Jan 29, 2018 - End Date: Feb 11, 2018
I am a historian, writer and Ph.D. Candidate. I am working on research projects which will enrich the awareness of local and global communities about the historical heritage of Galicia. To accomplish this goal I need to go back to Galicia.

I have dedicated my life to historical research and improving this world by researching and sharing stories which continue to inspire thousands of people. Currently, I am working on two historical researched books and two novels with strong educational background and numerous articles. Until now I have written almost 40 articles (in English and Spanish) about this place and my goal is to increase the awareness of this region and its historical heritage. All of my articles and books are the result of my strong interest in the enrichment of others and passion for Galician history. One of my books is related to the islands near the city of Vigo known as Cies Islands. This paradisial place is considered by the local community a candidate for the status of World Heritage by UNESCO. Therefore, I decided to write a book that describes the history of these islands since the ancient times until the World War II. I want to take my readers on a fascinating journey with ancient tribes that made the settlement on the stony coast of one of the islands, with Vikings, the fleet of Francis Drake, and German U-boots. Sadly, I cannot collect the resources necessary to accomplish this and the other books as long as I am not in Galicia.

For many decades Galicia in Northern Spain has faced huge discrimination. Their culture was banished. Due to this fact, the awareness of the local culture decreased, many people stopped learning their language. During my last stay in Galicia, I made carried out research related to the knowledge of the young generation of Galicians (18-35 years old) about their land. I was surprised and sad that there is so much to do in this case. Most of them didn't know the stories that took place in their neighborhood. They had no idea about remarkable people like Casto Mendez Nunez, Ramon Cabanillas, Antonio Sanjurjo or Concepción Arenal. Sadly, the society that forgets their language and history, loses its unique identity.

Moreover, I promote this region abroad. I make lectures, videos, I write poetry and recently I launched a blog. I want Galicians to be proud of their land. Some of them say that although I come from the other side of Europe, my heart is Galician. I guess it's true. My interest in this place started more than two years ago, I fell in love with this land and its history. With time I started to learn Spanish and Galician languages. I want people around the world to know how wonderful a place on Earth it is. I want to see the Galician community strong and confident about their roots. I believe that's the best way a historian and writer can serve to this world.

Last year I spent a month in Galicia researching its history and working on my mission. It was fully paid by me. I came back home with a luggage full of books, the camera full of pictures and notebooks full of the priceless notes. This time I ask you to support me so that I can continue my research, accomplish my projects, my books, and I can continue my mission of increasing the awareness of the historical legacy of this remarkable land. Galicia is a paradise on Earth and I want to help it shine on the map of the world.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
