My Travel Story

by: Gabriel Picazo Start Date: Apr 15, 2020 - End Date: Apr 14, 2021

When I was about 5 years old I learned what skydive was, and ever since then I wanted to be a part of it.

As I grew older I played a bunch of videogames like Crimson Skies or Halo, and watched adventure and science fiction movies like Star Wars (something that bonded me very deeply to my dad) all that played a big role in helping me realize my passion for aviation, so after high school I decided to pursue a career as a pilot!

As you can probably guess, a career in aviation is very expensive no matter where you are in the world. When I told my mom I wanted to go to flightschool in 2016, we had to sell one old apartment that we used to own so that I could afford getting my PPL (private pilot's license). If you are not too familiar with aviation, a PPL allows you to fly for recreation but not as a job, for that you need a Commercial license.

I have spent the last three years in the general aviation community, meeting wonderful people and having awesome adventures, but I have only been able to log 100 hours on my book and saved very little money to continue my dream, even though I have been working full time in multiple jobs. As you can imagine wages in Mexico are pretty low, I currently work as a professional medic interpreter and make less than 400 dollars a month.

Lucky for me, my skydive dream is relatively cheaper than other careers in aviation(but still out o my budget). There is a really good school in Daytona Beach, Florida called Air America, this school has extremely good rates and is really friendly with international students like me :)

Because I want to fly for a skydive club, I was able to lower the costs of the rest of my career to 18 000 dollars, with this I would be able to get a single engine commercial license!

I always wanted to be really good at something!  thanks to mom I was able to discover my talent in flying :) but now it's up to me to finish my training and turn it into a full time career.

I've always wanted to know what it feels to wake up every day and be able to do what you love for a living.  Will you help me get there if you can? :)
