My Travel Story

by: Jane Rollins Start Date: Aug 15, 2017 - End Date: Jun 10, 2018

Starting from 13th August 2018 I will be volunteering for 5 weeks with SLV global, doing a mental health and teaching placement in Sri Lanka.

SLV global is an organisation mostly run by volunteers which provides help and support to Sri Lankan organisations to sufficiently care for and help people with mental health issues thrive in their communities and to fight against the stigma of mental health in Sri Lanka.
I along with my team will be volunteering with patients in psychiatric units, children and adults with learning difficulties, nursery aged children and teaching English over the time that we will be there. We will plan and run our own therapeutic sessions mainly conisting of arts and crafts to encourage socialisation within the community and to promote positive mental health.

This volunteering oportunity is very important for me as I feel strongly about mental health and how people with difficulties in such areas shouldn't be stigmatised and neglected, but how they should still be allowed to have fun, socialise and be creative. Moreover, I feel that it is important to help a poorer community than the UK as we are privilaged to have the health care and support that we do and by volunteering I will be doing my part to help sustain a good mental health service in Sri Lanka.

Across the year I will be doing many fundraising events (such as snowdon climb, sponsored walks, cake sales, fundraising evenings, etc.) so watch for any updates.
