This summer I will be traveling to Arusha, Tanzania, Africa. I am a Early Childhood Education Major and have had a strong call in my heart to experience and teach different cultures, especially in rural Africa. I have had my heart set on a teaching service trip and whent the opportunity presented itself through the Department of Education at the University of South Carolina to not only teach in Tanzania but to be immersed in the Maasai Tribe culture, serve to improve the school, and experience the great natrual wonders of Africa I could not pass it up! This will impact my future as a teacher because not only will this opportunity to student teach in Africa open doors and boost my resume but it will boost my abiltiy to form culturally relevent pedagogy and open my mind to the diversity of every child in the classroom. In Africa I will be pushed out of my comfort zone and challenged in ways far different than I would by staying here in the U.S. but all the lessons I learn will only teach me as an educator and human being to respect all cultures, religions, languages, and people because this world is vast and diverse and we can only hope to shape the hearts of future generations if our hearts are first open to experiencing and understanding others.
