Studying abroad is a unique and personal experience. Whether seeking adventure, fun, or a change in environment, this experience takes on different forms for students. Personally, I strive to make studying abroad more than just an adventure or something fun. I believe it is the embodiment of pairing learning through experiences with knowledge gained inside the classroom. Traveling and studying abroad is an experience of a lifetime, and an opportunity to expand and diversify my mind. This opportunity would provide me with a perspective impossible to obtain if I remain inside my academic comfort zone. Encountering the world from another culture’s point of view is something I find not only interesting and thrilling, but a necessity for both personal and academic growth.

Studying abroad comes with many responsibilities. As a student in a foreign country, I will be an ambassador for not only my school but for CIEE and my country. I understand the magnitude of this role, and I want to represent my country, my school, and my culture in a positive light. As an Asian Studies minor, this opportunity for a practical experience in my chosen field of study will prepare me for my future trainings and career. Additionally, studying abroad will enable me to both bring my background to Japan as well as share with my peers the practices of the Japanese culture upon my return home.

I understand that traveling abroad is not an easy task and should not be taken lightly. I am qualified and ready for the challenge. Growing up in a mobile family, I have learned to effectively integrate myself into routines of my ever-changing homes, often times with no help. I am a veteran of understanding and thriving in new social dynamics. I have a heart for people and I love meeting people of different backgrounds and worldviews. My childhood of moving around the United States has encouraged me to cultivate my interest in understanding not only my countries’ people, but international cultures as well. I want to give back to the country that will be harboring me for a semester by getting involved in an orphanage, as well. Kids are the future and to invest in them is the right thing to do.

Studying abroad in Japan is truly a great opportunity and an experience that I can carry through my lifetime. My life will be changed in a dynamic and exciting way and, if given the opportunity, I know it will help me flourish as a student and professional.
