My Travel Story

Hi everyone, my name is Erica Rice and I am a freshman at North Carolina State University. As a first-year and a young Afro-Latina woman who aspires to leave an impact on my community and for my own goal(s), I often set milestones. In college, I plan to:
  • Take classes on skills I'm interested in (leadership, fitness, culture, data analytics, etc)
  • Volunteer a total of 50+ hours
  • Study abroad 2+ times
Just to name a few. For this upcoming Summer (2023), I have made plans to study abroad in Argentina. As it will be my first time ever going out of the country, the expense is big. Especially for my degree: Marketing. 

Why Would I Choose to Travel During my First-Year in College?
I knew that it would be the first major goal I'd check off my bucket list. If I'd done nothing else my entire college career, I'd have traveled. I have always dreamed of going to a Spanish-speaking country as my grandmother is from Panama. Whenever she would come back from seeing family, she would bring my cousins and me, trinkets and gifts. Stepping foot out of my country and into another would allow me to open my eyes to the cultural differences across the world. One day, I hope to have traveled numerous times and visited my family in Panama.

Bringing Engagement to My Community
On my campus, I often see that POC have 1) never thought about going abroad or 2) felt that there weren't enough resources for them to do so. I want to bring awareness and more engagement to the idea of going outside the country. With the experience I will gain and bring back for my fellow peers, I hope to enlighten and show them the adventures to come. There are resources, there are people that care, and most importantly, you have to want more.
