Help Novalee Study Abroad in Australia
My Travel Story
A little bit about myself-
I am in my 4th year of college at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. My expected graduation is in December 2023 with a Bachelor's in Public Health. I fell in love with public health because I have always wanted to help people but found that science was not my specialty. Public Health focuses on "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." I have been working on studying specifically underserved populations and figuring out ways to improve their health within the communities. I hope to one day give back to those populations, especially in Omaha, my hometown.
It has always been a dream of mine to study abroad during college, but for work and personal reasons, no programs worked well. I gave up on the plan and just focused on school and work until I recently got an email that changed everything.
Australia Study Abroad Trip Details-
This program is a course called "Motivation for Physical Activity." We will be studying Australia's environment and how they take approaches to improve their citizens' health, specifically regarding physical activity. We will then compare it to the U.S and hopefully take back our knowledge to think of ways to improve physical health here at home. This class is the perfect program as it is only three weeks during our "J-Term." so I will not be too homesick but still have enough time to explore and learn about a different country.
Description of Activities from UNO Education Abroad-
In Cairns, the group will settle into Australian life and have time to visit a world-class public esplanade space that invites public engagement. Enjoy a day on the Great Barrier Reef, a natural resource that provides numerous recreational opportunities. In Townsville, explore local neighborhoods, walks, and sports facilities, stay two nights on Magnetic Island, and hear from locals about how the city continues to envision its environment and encourage physical activity. For a comparative experience, the program will conclude with the busy and global city of Sydney. For example, visit the recently developed urban space of Barangaroo and hear from an Aboriginal Guide on what this space has meant and achieved within the community. This traveling itinerary provides a balance of faculty-led classroom sessions, field research, guest speakers, site visits, and cultural activities.
Cost of Trip-
While this trip sounds amazing, it comes with an expensive cost. The program is estimated to cost between 6,500-6,800. Not including spending money over there. I am asking for all the help I can get on this educational trip before I graduate.
