Being able to volunteer my time and skills in a area facing healthcare disparities benefits the community I will serve as well as myself. Through this I can gain experience in a real-world healthcare setting different then the setting I'm used to in the U.S., broadening my understanding of diverse medical practices, patient care, and resource management in different environments. As a future doctor, I get to develop cultural competence, communication skills, and adaptability—key traits for any physician.
Through this I will learn more about  taking initiative, collaborating with diverse teams, and handling challenging situations. Volunteering also builds a sense of empathy and community, strengthening my commitment to service and patient-centered care. Ultimately, it’s an opportunity to grow both as a future healthcare provider and a compassionate leader.

This medical based volunteer trip offers a chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of people who might not have access to all the care they need. Many healthcare systems, even those with decent infrastructure like Costa Rica’s, still face gaps—whether due to limited resources, language barriers, or a high demand for services. By volunteering, I get to directly contribute to closing those gaps.

Additionally, volunteering in a different healthcare environment allows me to expand my understanding of healthcare delivery in a global context, gaining new insights and skills, all while helping people in need. This gives me the opportunity to give back to communities outside my own and participate in something bigger than myself.
