I will be living with an Andean Peruvian family in a Quechua-speaking community and helping them with various tasks. By living day-to-day life the way the locals do, while learning about their lifestyle, I hope to not only contribute to the community but learn from a unique culture far different from my own. I would love to be able to further support the community with worthwhile donations where needed.

I will be living with a local family and helping them with daily tasks, contributing to efficiency economically, around the house, and in the community.

My duties will vary greatly but could include:
  • Farming and agricultural work, including animal husbandry
  • Construction
  • Domestic chores
  • Learning about traditional weaving and natural dyes
  • Helping make textiles for sale at a local market
  • Teaching English classes
  • Helping with educational activities
  • Taking part in local festivals and gatherings
I am passionate about this project because not only do I truly enjoy learning about people and cultures, but being able to volunteer in diverse communities allows me to give back to the areas I visit. As a prospective doctoral student in sociology, cultural experiences like this are a way to learn more about the world we live in, provide insight into the societies and cultures that inhabit it, and engender empathy, compassion, and personal reflection.
