My Travel Story

by: Jessie Newsome Start Date: Oct 23, 2016 - End Date: Apr 22, 2017
Hi guys! I’m fundraising to join SLV in Sri Lanka for 5 weeks in July/August on Level one mental health placement.
Established in 2010, SLV is a voluntary organisation dedicated to helping local communities in countries such as Sri Lanka, Bali and India. SLV was set up by Lucy Nightingale, a psychology graduate from the University of Manchester and Yasintha Rathnayake, a youth worker in Sri Lanka. SLV runs projects in conjunction with local youth workers to help the community, while giving psychology students and graduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience, immersed in a vastly different culture.

During my placement, I’ll be working with individuals who suffer with mental health issues, as well as working with individuals with special needs and teaching English to children and young people on vocational courses. My team and I will be getting stuck into Sri Lankan culture and working with those who may be marginalized in Sri Lankan society.

In addition to the hard work, l will be attending workshops run by Samutthana, the King’s College London resource centre for trauma, displacement and mental health. This will leave me well equipped to deal with any challenges the trip may present me with.

I currently study Applied Psychology at University College Cork, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain hands on experience working with individuals who have a variety of different needs. I feel passionately about this work as the resources available to individuals in Sri Lanka who require additional support are not as extensive as the supports available to us in the western world.

I am fundraising to cover the costs of my placement fees only, I will be covering everything else including my flights and travel insurance by myself. I would be eternally grateful for any donations contributed to help me cover the costs of the trip. I’ll be sure to keep you updated with everything that’s unfolding!
There are many ways you can show your support including sharing on Facebook, donating, and lending your skills!

I promise to send anyone who donates a vibrant postcard from beautiful Sri Lanka!

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
